Comment on Protecting Marriage by Joanne

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that marriage between a man and a woman is a social institution, not just a religious or state-based institution? Although, religion and the state both recognize such male-female bonds as marriages, that does not mean either one (religion or state) owns it or creates it. Mating of male and female, resulting in the intergenerational family, pre-dated all other social institutions, and has its own distinctive character and merits apart from them. Some have argued that it is not marriage, but the three generational biological family (parents, children, grandparents) that forms the foundational unit of human society, but marriage is the core bond that both generates and binds that family structure. No other relationship is able to do that.

This is not the first opinion piece on the marriage amendment; it was specifically cited in a previous post in the Forum, titled "No Truce on Social Issues" last year. I hope everyone will also read that post as well, and go to the link provided on the relationship of marriages and mother-father families to economics.

The topic being presented is on the Marriage Protection Amendment, which will be on the ballot in the May, 2012 primary, why it is needed, and how to support marriage as an issue. For information on the effects of marriage policy on economics, see the Forum discussion on this website regarding social issues.

A thought on the advantage of joining a political party instead of registering unaffiliated: the political parties recruit, train, select, and directly support the candidates who run for office. So unaffiliated voters cannot directly influence the candidate selection process. They only get to vote for candidates who run in the primary election, and must vote consistently using a party-based ballot even then. Why not join the party and have the opportunity to participate in the whole selection process?! Most importantly, the principles of the party rarely change, and can be modified only by party members. In short, for full participation in the political process, joining a party provides the most opportunity for individual influence. It is also fun, you meet other great people who really care about the community. Reregister today!

Great in depth work. I feel sorry for these folks who feel cheated. But after reading about their addled economic ideas, it is scary that so many on the left see them as a serious commentary on our economic problems. It is just another way they will be exploited.

Is there any organized, visible opposition to these measures? I see lots of signs around town in favor, but nothing against. There was opposition signage when the one percent restaurant tax was on the ballot a few years ago.

I totally agree with "no" on both measures. Every time I see a bus go by with just a couple passengers I am irked and wonder why buses could not be smaller: seems that would be more prudent, especially in these times with gas prices the way they are.

Awesome assessment of our not so "fair city." It is a shame but true. It seems that only a few are even aware and still even fewer actually "get it." BURIED SOMEWHERE IN THE BACK. Just like our city will be if we dont take it back!
